Public Invited to Shred Documents to Protect Privacy
There is no charge, but donations accepted to support Junior Achievement
LENEXA, Kan. ( 04/10/2008) -- Free, secure destruction of financial records is being offered on April 19 to help area families protect personal information from theft and misuse.
The project, sponsored by CommunityAmerica, Shred-it, NBC Action News (KSHB-TV) and Papa John's Pizza, will help safeguard financial privacy with proceeds benefiting Junior Achievement of Middle America, who provides financial literacy programming to local schools.
"Some people who took advantage of the shredding event last year asked for the opportunity to make a donation, and we are making that available this year to advance financial literacy in our schools," said Dennis Pierce, CEO of CommunityAmerica.
The April 15 income tax return filing deadline usually means that financial records such as checking and savings account records, credit card receipts and statements, and other documents with private financial information are no longer needed.
"Shred-it is in the business of protecting consumer privacy every day and we are excited to offer this service to the public again this year," said David Foster, General Manager of Shred-it. "We destroyed more than 50,000 pounds of confidential documents during last year's event and we hope to top that on April 19." The shredding program enables families to destroy up to three boxes of such documents at no charge. "NBC Action News and Call for Action are excited to continue to offer this valuable service to the community for the third straight year, free of charge. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes and shredding is one of the best ways to protect your name and identity," added Call for Action's Jenn Strathman.
